“About 7 years back, I found myself in the original uprising program which now has become the phenomenon named MedStart. I joined the program when it was founded in 2008 by Dr. Edward Chu when the original name of the program was Inoworks. This program continues to reach its goal as an opportunity to enrich young junior high school students in the knowledge of medicine, in which the program is clearly a success since it continues to expand. I remember my days as a MedStart camper, and I knew each year I could I have to come back. I enjoyed three years of fun learning, however then it came to me, “What do I do now?” That’s when I realized I couldn’t stay away, I had to be involved. Therefore I have vowed every year I would come back to Annenberg building and Aaron Hall to help mentor and witness the continuous expansion of the amazing program I’ve come to love. And of course that’s exactly what I’ve done. MedStart 2016 will be my fifth time coming back as a mentor and volunteer and eight years total of interaction with this program. I want all the MedStart newcomers and even returnees to soak the adventures and knowledge that they’ll receive as it will do them great benefits down the line. MedStart has had a huge impact on me and means so much that I don’t know what I would be doing or where I’d be without the program. MedStart led me to a high school equivalent program named MedDoc’s which I’ve done numerous of times and it has helped me shaped my career. Right now I am a college student at the Borough of Manhattan Community College as well as Mortuary Affairs Specialist for the United States Army. Thanks to MedStart I am on track and still medically oriented with my personal medical involvements in my community and seek to obtain my dream of becoming a police officer.”
