Our Aim:
Students for Equal Opportunity in Medicine (SEOM) is an organization that focuses on addressing issues pertaining to underrepresented minority groups in medicine (URMs) in addition to educating the general medical community about those issues. At Sinai, we also interface and collaborate with various other student groups as well as the Center for Excellence in Youth Education (CEYE), the Center for Multicultural Affairs (CMCA), the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), and Admissions. From holding monthly applicant panel style chats, to organizing advocacy meetings and year round events, SEOM is devoted to creating equality in medicine for groups that are typically underrepresented through a multifaceted approach.
A Walk Down Memory Lane:
Though SEOM was formally started in the early 90’s, there has been a history of advocacy and outreach for communities of color since the early 70’s through the Mount Sinai Chapter of the Student National Medical Association. SEOM is one of the longest standing student groups at Mount Sinai.
Advocacy:
SNMA and LMSA
Currently, SEOM serves as an umbrella organization to the national chapters Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA). The 4 current co-presidents are either affiliated with SNMA (Kaothar, Tracy) or with LMSA (Daniel, Sharen).
Decreasing Medical Disparities and Creating Better Pipeline Programs:
SEOM serves as an umbrella organization and/or the starting ground to various Sinai student groups and events as well
