Award of Excellence winners now online

The Student Council Award of Excellence is given in appreciation of students who have made a significant impact on student life and the broader community. We take nominations continuously throughout the year via this form and class reps vote monthly to select one awardee among grad student and med student nominations. Class reps themselves are not eligible for the award.

They are the heroes we need, even if they aren’t the heroes that we deserve.

Although the names are on a plaque in the Student Lounge that is updated every couple years, we’ve decided to publish the full list of names online as well. Congrats to current and past winners!

Amendment 1 to the Student Constitution passes

We are pleased to report that the first amendment to the Student Constitution has passed both a strict two-thirds vote of officers and a general body vote.

The amendment changes the budget period for Student Council from semesterly to yearly budgeting. That means student organizations only have to write one budget per year (less paperwork!), and instead of $350 per semester, the new default maximum will be $700 annually that could be reallocated to, e.g., any balance of events between the fall vs. the spring. The amendment changes nothing else, except for two new reporting tasks assigned to the SC Treasurers.

From Student Council’s perspective, this helps implement new guidelines that increase flexibility in what we can reimburse student organizations for. As we frequently voted on updates to the budget throughout the year, it doesn’t really affect how many times we have to vote on budget-related issues.

We’ve posted the new full text of the Constitution with the Amendment.

New Aron Hall Printer!

Looking forward to a great year. You may contact the entire board by emailing studentc@icahn.mssm.edu or tweeting @SinaiStudents.

New Twitter: @SinaiStudents

Brevity is a virtue—and so are shorter, more infrequent emails. In this spirit, we’ve decided to start a Twitter account, @SinaiStudents, for smaller, ad-hoc announcements.

You can already see it in the sidebar of this site, or if you like, you can…

We’ll also use this account to highlight the cool accomplishments of student groups on campus, and the events on our Student Activities Calendar. Want us to publicize something? DM or mention us, or if you like long-form, we have an email account of course.

A Facebook page for the group is also forthcoming, if you prefer ye olde Blue Wall. But the content on both streams will be very similar. Let us know what you think!

First Meeting of 2015-2016

The first Student Council General Body meeting for the 2015-2016 Academic Year will be this coming Wednesday, September 16 at 7pm in the Levinson Student Lounge in Annenberg. All students are welcome at General Body meetings. Food will be provided! We plan to discuss agenda items for the coming student year and organize priorities for each subcommittee.

Elections for first year and certain Graduate School representative positions are still ongoing, and they will not be completed before the first meeting. For now, anyone interested in Student Council, particularly those intending to run, should attend. At the second meeting of the year (October 14), all new and current representatives will be expected to attend.

Do you know of a student that has gone above and beyond in contributing to Sinai or the student community? Please nominate them for the September Award of Excellence using this form: http://goo.gl/forms/imaZCE2nyF Nominations are voted on each month by class representatives and two awards, one for a grad student and one for a med student, is presented each month at Student Council meetings. All Sinai students, except current class representatives, are eligible.

This year, we will leave this form open throughout the year, so you may nominate students at any time. They will automatically be considered for the next month’s award for which they are eligible.

Not able to make the meeting? Don’t worry—this year we shall post detailed minutes after each meeting on our website, and will send one follow-up email after each meeting summarizing the two or three main highlights. We hope to see many of you there this coming Wednesday!

Library Stair Access

We wanted to update you on a wish that has been brought up to the Academic Tech/Library reps many times that has finally come true.

If you are on Annenberg’s 12th or 13th floor and you wish to get to the library, you may avoid a long wait at the elevators by taking the stairs to the 10th floor, walking around and past the elevators, and using your ID card to swipe into the special door there. The door is accessible to students Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm.

Please use this privilege responsibly and do not allow random strangers to “piggyback” behind you. We have assured the librarians that students are smart enough to handle this kind of access and library materials won’t start disappearing all of a sudden, so let’s not prove ourselves unable to maintain that level of trust.

And one more thing… the library is considering renting a Stress Relief Dog that would hang out by the elevators for visitors to meet and hang out with at certain hours, perhaps more frequently around exam weekends. These dogs are very well trained and would be on loan from a service agency. If you guys have any possible concerns or thoughts (positive or negative) about that idea, please let us know!

Sincerely,

Your Academic Tech Subcommittee reps
